Our verdict on RSS Guard

RSS Guard is a free, open-source desktop feed reader for Windows, Linux, and macOS. It is aimed at readers who want more than basic RSS subscription management, including broad feed-format support, service synchronization, offline reading, article extraction, filtering, podcast playback, and configurable storage. It also supports BSD and OS/2, along with OPML import and export for moving subscriptions between readers. The result is a strong fit for desktop users who want control over how feeds are collected, stored, filtered, and displayed.

Its ecosystem is one of its clearest strengths. RSS Guard supports synchronization with Feedly, Inoreader, FreshRSS, Nextcloud News, Miniflux, The Old Reader, Tiny Tiny RSS, Bazqux, and Reedah, while also integrating with Gmail. That range gives users several ways to keep subscriptions aligned with an existing service. For readers who prefer local control, SQLite and MariaDB storage options provide additional flexibility. Gemini protocol support and basic XMPP PubSub and chat support extend its scope beyond conventional feed reading, although the XMPP functionality is deliberately limited.

The standout feature is breadth. RSS, Atom, JSON, iCalendar, and Sitemap support is paired with JavaScript article filters for keyword filtering, deduplication, and labeling. Built-in extraction provides readable article views, while customizable themes, skins, and toolbars let users adjust the interface. Podcast playback adds another media use case. RSS Guard is therefore best suited to free desktop users who value synchronization and configuration. Users who need mobile apps or a simpler, narrower reader should choose a more focused alternative.
