Our verdict on Rolisteam
Rolisteam is a free, open-source virtual tabletop for game masters and players running tabletop role-playing sessions on Windows, macOS or Linux. It supports hosting and joining games, campaign management, text-based communication, shared materials and dice rolling. Its feature set suits groups that want a desktop-centered workspace for organizing campaigns and running sessions without a paid subscription.
The strongest part of Rolisteam is its shared campaign toolkit. Groups can work with maps, notes, images, mind maps, character sheets, webpages and PDFs in one session. A webpage viewer supports viewing and sharing web content, while the dice roller includes 3D dice. Three independent music players add separate audio controls, and the antagonist or NPC database panel gives game masters a dedicated place for campaign opponents and non-player characters. Campaign data is stored in local folders and JSON files, which fits groups that want direct access to their campaign files.
Rolisteam also offers global, private and custom chatrooms, but its communication model is text-based rather than built around video or voice. Desktop coverage is broad across Windows, macOS and Linux, and documentation describes a separate headless Roliserver component for remote hosting. Groups seeking mobile access, integrations, built-in rules content or video and audio conferencing should choose a different virtual tabletop. Rolisteam is a strong fit for open-source desktop campaigns where shared materials, local files and campaign management matter most.
