  • Where it wins

    • TinyLFU admission and SampledLFU eviction target cache efficiency
    • Cost-based eviction helps manage memory-bound workloads
    • Concurrent access, TTLs, metrics, and a generic key-value API
  • Where it doesn't

    • Runs in-process rather than as a hosted or distributed cache

Our verdict on Ristretto

Ristretto is an open-source Go library for building fast, concurrent, in-process caches. It stores key-value data in memory and is aimed at developers embedding caching directly into Go applications and services. The generic key-value API supports application-level cache use cases, while the library's focus on throughput, hit ratio, and correctness keeps its scope centered on caching rather than broader data infrastructure. It is a strong fit for teams that want a self-hosted Go cache without adopting a separate caching service.

Its cache-management features are the main reason to consider it. TinyLFU admission helps determine which entries should enter the cache, while SampledLFU eviction manages removal as the cache reaches its memory boundary. Cost-based eviction adds a way to account for the relative cost of entries instead of treating every value identically. Concurrent cache access supports use within concurrent applications, and time-to-live expiration provides control over how long entries remain available. Optional hit, miss, eviction, and cost metrics add visibility when those signals are useful.

Ristretto's narrow deployment model is also its clearest boundary. It runs within the application process through a Go in-process cache library, rather than providing a hosted or distributed caching service. Data persistence is not part of the product, so it suits temporary, recomputable, or application-managed cached data better than workloads requiring durable storage. Choose Ristretto when a Go service needs a focused memory cache with admission, eviction, expiration, concurrency, and optional metrics. Choose an alternative when the requirement is persistence, high availability, or a cache shared across separate application processes.
