Our verdict on Google Cloud Memorystore
Google Cloud Memorystore is a fully managed in-memory data service for application caches and low-latency workloads. Its Redis offering is designed for teams running applications on Google Cloud environments, including Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Run, Cloud Run functions, and App Engine. It supports API and web access, with Basic and Standard Redis tiers for different availability needs.
The published plans show two main configurations. Basic M1 provides a standalone Redis instance, while Standard M1 adds high availability through cross-zone replication and automatic failover. Pricing is usage-based and varies by region, capacity, tier, replicas, and billing option, so the product fits teams that prefer consumption-based cloud infrastructure over a fixed monthly subscription. Read replicas are supported, with up to five replicas, and instances can scale up to 300 GB. Teams should evaluate expected capacity and replica requirements before selecting a tier.
Memorystore fits applications already operating within Google Cloud's ecosystem. Private IP networking is available through VPC peering or Private Service Access, and TLS can protect data in transit. Cloud Monitoring metrics and Cloud Logging integration provide operational visibility within the broader Google Cloud environment. The service is focused on managed Redis rather than persistent data storage: persistent storage and automatic backups are not supported. Choose Memorystore when managed Redis, Google Cloud integration, private networking, and high-availability options are priorities. Choose another Redis service when durable storage or automatic backup capabilities are essential.
