Our verdict on repo.or.cz
repo.or.cz is a free public Git hosting service for free-software projects. It suits developers and project communities that need a public repository with authorized SSH pushes, per-user permissions, browsing through Gitweb, and repository forking. Projects can be created in push mode for direct contribution, or configured to mirror repositories hosted elsewhere. Its focus is public collaboration rather than a broad software development platform.
The hosting workflow covers several practical collaboration needs. Authorized developers can push over SSH, while project owners can control access with per-user push permissions. Mirrored repositories are checked hourly and exposed through Gitweb, making the service useful when a public copy needs to stay aligned with another repository. Email and JSON commit notifications support basic project awareness, and optional anonymous pushes to a mob branch provide a distinct contribution model for suitable projects.
repo.or.cz is a narrow fit for teams that want free public Git hosting without a paid plan structure. The web platform keeps the scope focused, but the product does not provide private repositories, code reviews, CI/CD, or integrations. Projects also need to account for the 400 MB repository-size guideline and the fact that repositories are not backed up by the service. Choose repo.or.cz for public free-software repositories, lightweight contribution workflows, mirroring, and straightforward notifications. Choose an alternative when private development, integrated review and automation, or broader ecosystem connectivity is central to the workflow.
