Our verdict on Remote Commander
Remote Commander is an open-source desktop remote-access manager for engineers and homelab users. It brings SSH terminals, SFTP transfers, RDP and VNC sessions, embedded web consoles, remote and local file editing, local terminals, and VPN controls into one tabbed, split-pane application. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux through an Electron desktop app, with profiles, groups, workspaces, and a credential vault for organizing connections.
Its standout strength is protocol breadth within a single workspace. SSH includes xterm.js, jump-host support, search, and reconnect, while the dual-pane SFTP manager adds transfer queues and a permissions editor. RDP runs through Guacamole with a FreeRDP fallback, VNC uses noVNC, and web sessions run in isolated profile sessions. OpenVPN and WireGuard profile management adds auto-connect, making the application particularly suitable for users who move between VPN-dependent environments and different remote systems.
The main trade-off is focus: Remote Commander is built for desktop operators rather than distributed teams. Its encrypted profile import/export, encrypted credentials at rest, and connection-history logging support organized personal workflows, but the lack of team-sharing features limits its fit for shared administration. The product is also described as being in active development at v0.1.0, so buyers should prefer an established alternative when organizational maturity is more important than open-source breadth. Choose Remote Commander for a cross-platform desktop workspace that combines remote protocols, file tools, and VPN control; choose another option for mobile access or collaborative connection ownership.
