Our verdict on Reco
Reco is open-source desktop software for coaches, parents, builders, tinkerers, and developers filming sports with two cameras or camera feeds. It stitches those feeds into a panoramic sports view, supports AI-based ball and player tracking, and keeps footage and processing on the user’s hardware. The project also includes a command-line interface, reusable Rust engine, and OBS Studio plugin, making it relevant to both straightforward sports recording and technical production workflows.
Its strongest area is the live sports pipeline. Automatic camera calibration uses feature matching plus sensor or audio synchronization, while automatic camera control can apply framing presets. GPU-accelerated processing supports live camera ingest through GStreamer, and the interactive preview provides pan and zoom. Local video export and replay-buffer workflows extend the product beyond live viewing. OBS Studio, GStreamer, FFmpeg, and RTMP integrations also give it practical fit within streaming and broadcast setups.
Reco is a narrow tool by design. Its focus on two-camera sports panoramas suits users who need a specialized capture and replay workflow, but it is less appropriate for general-purpose 360 production. The published feature set does not center on equirectangular editing, 360 stabilization, headset preview, or broad camera-creation workflows. Choose Reco for free, local, open-source sports stitching with tracking and automation; choose a broader 360 video application when immersive editing and delivery features are the priority.
