Our verdict on rasdaman
rasdaman is a self-hosted array database and analytics engine for multidimensional raster data, including spatio-temporal sensor, image, simulation, and statistics data. Its intended users include teams working in earth, space, and life sciences, as well as engineering, where data is naturally represented as multidimensional arrays. The Community edition is free and open source; Enterprise is a proprietary edition with additional scalability features.
The technical focus is unusually specific: rasdaman manages arrays of arbitrary dimension and cell type, with declarative rasql queries for selecting, inserting, updating, and deleting data. Partial updates target selected array regions. Tiled storage can use configurable partitioning strategies, and spatial indexing helps locate tiles for queries. Tile-streaming evaluation and server-side query-result caching round out the query path. For geospatial applications, its OGC WCS and WCPS interfaces connect array access to established geospatial workflows. This depth makes it a stronger fit for raster and datacube workloads than for teams seeking a general-purpose database across unrelated data models.
Integration options include R, Python, Java, and C++, along with GIS and geospatial tools such as QGIS, GeoServer, GDAL, OpenLayers, and ESRI ArcGIS. Deployment is self-hosted on Linux, so organizations need to operate the database in their own environment. Enterprise adds distributed processing and data-center federation as well as scalability features, making it the relevant option for deployments that need those capabilities. The published edition structure gives smaller or exploratory projects a free community path, while buyers evaluating Enterprise should plan to contact sales. Choose rasdaman for multidimensional array analytics and geospatial interfaces; consider alternatives if your priority is a broad database model or managed cloud deployment.
