Our verdict on Amazon DynamoDB

Amazon DynamoDB is a serverless, fully managed NoSQL database for applications built around key-value or document data models. It is intended for operational workloads such as user profiles, shopping carts, session stores, gaming data, and IoT telemetry. Applications can access it through DynamoDB APIs, PartiQL, or the AWS CLI, with web and API use supported. Its automatic scaling and two capacity modes make it suitable for teams that want managed infrastructure rather than database server administration.

DynamoDB follows a freemium model with a free plan and usage-based billing rather than fixed paid tiers. On-demand capacity is available for workloads that need automatic scaling without capacity planning, while provisioned capacity provides another operating mode. The feature set includes Time to Live expiration, ACID transactions, point-in-time recovery, backups, DynamoDB Streams change data capture, and native vector search. These capabilities give it a broad operational scope, although the 400 KB maximum item size should be considered when modeling larger records.

Its strongest fit is within an AWS-centered application stack. Integrations include AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, Amazon Kinesis Data Streams, Amazon Athena, Amazon SageMaker, AWS Backup, AWS IAM, and AWS KMS. Multi-Region, multi-active global tables support geographically distributed deployments, while disk persistence and cloud deployment define its infrastructure model. Choose DynamoDB when managed scaling, AWS integration, and key-value or document access are priorities. Consider another database when fixed-tier pricing, open-source deployment, or records larger than 400 KB are central requirements.
