Our verdict on Ralph
Ralph brings asset management, data center infrastructure management and CMDB capabilities into a self-hosted, open-source application. It is aimed at IT, infrastructure, data center and back-office teams that need to track physical assets, software and hardware licenses, vendor contracts, support records, domains and lifecycle states. The platform is available through the web and supports Windows, macOS and Linux environments, alongside an API and self-hosted deployment model.
Its strongest area is data-center and infrastructure control. Graphical data center and rack visualization gives teams a structured view of physical environments, while configurable asset workflows and transitions support lifecycle processes. Ralph also includes host deployment using Kickstart, Preseed, Ubuntu and iPXE configurations, plus custom fields on application objects. Employee stock-taking is supported through a My equipment view, extending the system beyond infrastructure teams into equipment accountability. Puppet, Ansible and StatsD integrations provide useful connections for teams working with those tools, though the ecosystem is more focused than that of a broad ITAM suite.
The open-source model makes Ralph a practical choice for organizations that want to operate and adapt their own asset system without a paid tier structure. Its REST API includes filtering and CRUD operations, which can support internal workflows and connected systems. The trade-off is operational responsibility: teams must run the self-hosted application and manage its place within their environment. Choose Ralph when data-center visibility, lifecycle tracking, licensing, contracts and configurable workflows matter most. Organizations seeking a wider integration ecosystem or a less infrastructure-centered ITAM approach should consider alternatives.
