Our verdict on R-Linux

R-Linux is a free file recovery utility from R-Tools Technology for recovering files from Ext2, Ext3, and Ext4 file systems. It runs on Linux and Windows host systems and is suited to users working with damaged, deleted, or reformatted partitions, removable media, and Linux storage volumes. Recovery sources include hard drives, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, CompactFlash cards, USB drives, ZIP drives, Memory Sticks, and other removable media. It can also search unknown file systems by known file type.

Its strongest differentiator is the combination of Linux-oriented recovery features and imaging tools at no cost. R-Linux supports Linux mdadm volumes and LVM/LVM2, can create disk, partition, and partial-disk image files, and provides scan-process visualization. S.M.A.R.T. attribute monitoring adds drive-health context, while file content previews allow files to be reviewed before recovery. Recovered files can be saved to disks accessible by the host operating system. These capabilities make it a practical fit for Linux administrators, technically experienced users, and anyone needing a free utility for Ext-family file systems or removable media.

The trade-off is scope. R-Linux does not reconstruct RAID arrays or recover data over a network, so it is not a broad choice for array-level recovery or remote recovery workflows. The published offering is freeware rather than a tiered product, with no paid plan structure to compare. Choose R-Linux when Linux filesystem recovery, volume support, imaging, and file previews matter more than broad platform coverage. Choose an alternative when RAID reconstruction, network-based recovery, or a wider range of filesystem scenarios is central to the recovery job.
