Our verdict on Quark

Quark is an open-source personal cloud from the AutoButler project, designed to run on hardware in your home. Household members can use a browser to browse, upload, organize, search, and share files, photos, and documents. iOS and Android apps are also available in testing. Its intended audience is people who want to manage their own storage rather than rent space from a cloud provider, including households that want private spaces for individual members.

The product’s main appeal is the combination of personal storage and household organization. Members can share folders, create photo albums, mark favorites, and keep full-resolution originals. Search can look through file names and document contents, while deleted files can be restored from the trash. Browser-based document and spreadsheet editing, media playback, and a password vault stored encrypted on the drive add uses beyond basic file browsing. Quark can work on a home network without internet access, and an administrator can control whether remote access is enabled. These features make it a fit for people who want their files and photos organized around a home storage setup.

Quark is free and open source; the repository says there are no subscriptions. The tradeoff is that the owner needs home hardware and takes responsibility for the self-hosted setup. Mobile access is part of the offer, but the official site describes the iOS and Android apps as being in testing, so buyers who need settled mobile apps should account for that. Collaborative editing is not supported, so teams that need to work together in documents should look elsewhere. Quark makes more sense for households seeking a private file and photo hub than for organizations looking for team collaboration or managed cloud storage.
