Our verdict on PikoCI
PikoCI is an open-source, self-hosted continuous integration and delivery system built around a portable single binary. It suits teams that want to keep CI/CD execution in their own environment, including security-conscious organizations managing infrastructure across macOS, Linux, API, and self-hosted deployments. Pipelines use HCL and cover resources, jobs, runners, services, secrets, notifications, approval gates, audit logs, and role-based access. Local job execution also lets teams run pipelines without relying on a separate server for every workflow.
Its strongest fit is controlled execution with built-in governance. PikoCI can use embedded or separate workers, supports ephemeral services for jobs, and provides encrypted secret storage with secret backends. Role-based access, approval gates, audit logs, and OIDC single sign-on add controls for teams that need review and access-management workflows around deployments. Pull-request checks and resource caching support common development flows, while deployments can scale from in-memory or SQLite setups to PostgreSQL or MySQL-backed multi-instance configurations.
The trade-off is operational ownership and ecosystem breadth. PikoCI does not provide a managed hosted option, so teams must plan for their own installation, workers, storage, upgrades, and availability. Its documented Git resource support covers GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, and Forgejo, giving it a clear self-hosted Git focus but a narrower integration footprint than broader CI platforms. Teams that prioritize local control, HCL pipelines, and security controls should consider PikoCI; teams seeking hosted CI/CD or wider verified platform coverage should choose an alternative.
