Our verdict on GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions is a continuous integration and continuous delivery platform for developers and teams working from GitHub repositories. It automates build, test, deployment, and other repository workflows through YAML workflow files. Jobs can run on GitHub-hosted Linux, Windows, and macOS virtual machines or on customer-managed self-hosted runners. That makes it a practical fit for teams already organizing code, pull requests, releases, and packages within GitHub, while teams centered on another repository platform may find its ecosystem fit less compelling.
Pricing is structured around GitHub account plans. GitHub Free includes 2,000 GitHub Actions minutes per month and free standard GitHub-hosted runner usage for public repositories. GitHub Pro costs $4 per month when billed monthly and includes 3,000 minutes per month, plus advanced tools and insights for private repositories. GitHub Team costs $4 per user per month when billed monthly and includes 3,000 minutes per month for private repositories. GitHub Enterprise Cloud includes 50,000 minutes per month along with enterprise security, compliance, and administration. Usage beyond included allowances is metered by runner type, so teams should account for workflow volume and runner choices when evaluating total cost.
The feature set covers both routine pull request checks and more involved delivery workflows. Triggers can respond to pushes, pull requests, issue activity, releases, and other repository events; matrix builds can run across operating systems and runtime versions; and workflows can use secrets storage, live logs, artifacts, dependency caching, reusable actions, and templates. Integrations include GitHub Packages, the GitHub API, webhooks, and Docker Compose, with web, Windows, macOS, Linux, self-hosted, and API access. GitHub-centered teams needing configurable hosted or self-hosted execution should consider it; teams seeking a repository-neutral CI system should compare alternatives.
