Our verdict on PHPCI

PHPCI was a free, open-source continuous integration tool designed specifically for PHP projects. It is suited to PHP teams that want a minimal, self-hosted CI system and are comfortable operating the web-based tool themselves. Its scope is intentionally narrower than a general-purpose automation platform: the product focuses on preparing PHP builds, running configured checks, and working with common PHP project workflows rather than offering a broad hosted delivery environment.

Its core workflow covers practical PHP build tasks. PHPCI can clone projects from GitHub, Bitbucket, or a local path, install Composer dependencies, and set up and tear down test databases. Teams can configure combinations of supported plugins, exclude directories from plugin processing, and allow selected plugins to fail without stopping the build. GitHub, Bitbucket, and Composer are the named integrations, while YAML is the configuration format. That makes PHPCI a reasonable fit for projects whose CI needs center on PHP dependencies, tests, and database-backed checks.

The trade-off is limited platform depth and operational scope. PHPCI has a self-hosted runner but no hosted option, and it does not provide verified pull-request checks, build artifacts, caching, or parallelism. The project repository was archived and made read-only on February 15, 2025, which makes it a poor choice for teams seeking an actively maintained CI foundation or a managed service. Choose PHPCI for a simple PHP-focused workflow where ownership and low cost matter more than modern CI capabilities; choose an alternative when pull-request integration, scalable execution, or ongoing project development is essential.
