  • Where it wins

    • TOML metadata files version cleanly in git instead of raw JAR files
    • Exports CurseForge and Modrinth packs and imports CurseForge ones
    • packwiz-installer keeps MultiMC or ATLauncher instances auto-updated
  • Where it doesn't

    • Command line only; the docs point GUI users to third-party efforts
    • No installer; builds come from CI artefacts or compiling with Go
    • Auto-updating distribution needs an HTTP server you host

Our verdict on packwiz

packwiz treats a modpack as source code. Instead of a folder of JAR files, a pack is a set of TOML metadata files describing each mod and where it comes from, so the whole pack can live in a git repository, be reviewed like any other project and be rolled back when an update misbehaves. Commands add several mods at once from CurseForge and Modrinth, refresh the index, pin or unpin versions, mark mods as server-only or client-only and migrate a pack to a new Minecraft or loader version.

Distribution is where it earns its place on servers. The pack can be served over any HTTP server, with a built-in local server for testing, and the Java-based packwiz-installer, which works with MultiMC and ATLauncher, keeps players' instances in sync automatically on launch, including optional mods. When a public release is due, packwiz exports to CurseForge and Modrinth pack formats, with tutorials for publishing on each, and it can import an existing CurseForge pack to start from. The code is MIT-licensed and written in Go.

The documentation is direct about the audience: it is not meant for managing downloaded mod files, and people who want a graphical interface are pointed to third-party efforts. There are no packaged installers yet, so the program comes from CI build artefacts or a Go install. There is no launcher, mod browser or server panel, and the terminal is unavoidable. For pack authors who already use git, or server owners who want every player on exactly the same files, it is the most disciplined way to build and ship a pack.
