Our verdict on PacketSense
PacketSense is a desktop network-analysis and packet-investigation tool for network engineers, SOC analysts, incident responders, and security teams. It runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, and processes captures locally by default. Users can import PCAP, PCAPNG, and text-based packet evidence, or capture traffic from local network interfaces. Its workspace combines packet logs, protocol trees, filters, packet details, packet bytes, stream reconstruction, flow analysis, and routing analysis for TCP, UDP, HTTP-style traffic, OSPF, and BGP.
The product’s standout strength is its guided investigation layer. Threat hunting includes anomaly summaries and local rules, while the Local Analyst Assistant provides packet-linked findings. TLS handshake visibility adds security context, and the Pro plan adds guided diagnosis, reports, and MITRE-style investigation support. Reports and CSV or PCAP slice exports help turn packet analysis into shareable investigation output. This makes PacketSense a strong fit for teams that want detailed inspection alongside structured findings rather than a packet viewer focused only on low-level evidence.
The plan structure separates core analysis from guided investigation and governance. The 14-day Trial includes PCAP and text import, live capture, the Local Analyst Assistant, threat hunting, and reports. Individual is built for one analyst workstation and includes offline analysis, imports, and live capture. Pro adds guided diagnosis, threat hunting, reports, and MITRE-style support. Enterprise adds governance, seat and device management, cloud AI policy controls, local-only policy, and an enterprise support path. Pricing is set per engagement, with contact-sales purchasing. Teams needing decryption, remote capture, or a non-desktop deployment should choose an alternative; PacketSense is better suited to local desktop investigations across the three supported operating systems.
