ownCloud is open-source file synchronization, sharing, and content collaboration software for teams, companies, schools, institutions, and government organizations. It provides browser, desktop, and mobile access; internal and external sharing; device synchronization; file versioning and restoration; public links with passwords and expiration dates; and administrative controls. Organizations can deploy it as self-hosted software, use ownCloud.online, or run Infinite Scale in cloud-native environments. It is best suited to teams that want control over data location, access policies, integrations, and security settings.
Pricing supports both personal and commercial use. The Personal plan is free for personal use and includes all features, 100% open source, and unlimited users. The Commercial plan costs €15 per user per month and adds a commercial-use license, priority security updates, and professional support. Hosted options include ownCloud.online Teams at €13 per user per month from 5 users, with 1,000 GB of secure cloud storage, 200 GB extra storage per additional user, German hosting, and 180 days of file recovery. Single Users costs €15 per user per month for 1 to 4 users and includes 500 GB of secure cloud storage, German hosting, and 180 days of file recovery.
Its strongest fit is for organizations that need structured administration rather than basic file storage. Administrators can manage users, groups, quotas, and policies, while teams can use file lifecycle and retention management, multi-factor authentication, file firewall controls, ransomware protection, and full-text search. Integrations cover Active Directory, LDAP, S3, Dropbox, SharePoint, WebDAV, Splunk, Collabora Online, ONLYOFFICE, Microsoft Office Online, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Outlook. Choose ownCloud when self-hosting, policy control, and broad platform integration matter. Teams wanting only a simple hosted storage service may find its deployment and administration model more than they need.
