Our verdict on OWASP Penetration Testing Kit

OWASP Penetration Testing Kit (PTK) is an open-source Chrome extension for testing web applications from the browser sessions where they run. It is designed for security teams and testers working with authenticated applications and single-page applications, with coverage spanning dynamic testing, client-side analysis, runtime behavior, software components, traffic, JWTs, and browser storage. Its focus is deliberately narrow: browser-based application testing rather than network testing.

The feature set reaches beyond basic request inspection. PTK can run dynamic application security testing against selected requests, parameters, and request bodies, while also analyzing client-side JavaScript and HTML. In-browser runtime analysis covers DOM operations, navigation, and browser messaging. Browser traffic inspection supports request replay and modification, and the toolkit includes JWT analysis, cookie and browser-storage management, finding evidence, and reproduction details. These capabilities make it suitable for investigating application behavior and documenting findings within the browser workflow.

For repeatable workflows, PTK provides automation through PTK Agent and integrations with Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium, and Cypress. Its OWASP ZAP integration imports findings into the ZAP alert model, extending its place in broader security-testing processes. Choose PTK if your priority is free, open-source testing of web applications through browser activity, including client-side behavior and authenticated sessions. Choose another tool alongside it when network testing is required, or when your workflow does not center on Chrome-based browser testing. The project’s incubator classification is also relevant for teams assessing project maturity before adopting it in a larger program.
