Our verdict on oVirt
oVirt is a free, open-source distributed virtualization management platform for organizations running multi-host infrastructure. Its native foundation is the KVM hypervisor, with centralized administration for hosts, clusters, virtual machines, storage, and networks. Teams can choose between self-hosted engine and standalone Engine deployments, then manage environments through the web-based Administration Portal and VM Portal. It is best suited to infrastructure teams that want an open-source control plane for KVM virtualization rather than a hosted service.
Operational coverage is a major strength. oVirt supports live migration of running virtual machines between hosts without service interruption, automatic virtual machine restart and host failover through high availability, and both active-active and active-passive disaster recovery workflows. REST API and SDK integrations support administration and automation, while Ansible is available for disaster recovery and management workflows. These capabilities make the platform a fit for teams that need centralized control alongside continuity and automation features.
Its ecosystem reaches beyond KVM through integrations with Ansible, OpenShift Virtualization, VMware vCenter/ESXi, and Xen. KVM remains the native hypervisor, while the documentation describes VMware and Xen support for legacy external-provider workload imports. The self-hosted model gives organizations control over deployment, but it also places infrastructure operation within the team’s remit. oVirt is a strong choice for open-source KVM environments with multi-host management, migration, high availability, and recovery requirements. Teams seeking a managed SaaS virtualization service or a primarily VMware- or Xen-native platform should consider a different fit.
