Orb is a billing and revenue platform for software companies using usage-based, hybrid, or seat-based pricing. It ingests real-time usage events, applies custom SQL billable metrics, generates recurring and usage-based invoices, and supports automated payment collection. Customer-facing invoice and usage portals, automated reminders, collections workflows, pricing migrations, and price changes extend its role beyond basic invoicing. It is best suited to companies whose billing depends on product consumption or changing pricing models.

Orb uses contact-sales pricing and offers Core, Advanced, and Enterprise plans. Core includes real-time event ingestion and alerting, hybrid and usage-based billing, automated price changes, Orb Invoicing, and finance and tax integrations. Advanced adds data warehouse sync, Salesforce and NetSuite integrations, customer hierarchy, and premium support. Enterprise adds enterprise-grade SLAs and dedicated support. There is no free plan, so Orb is a better fit for teams ready to evaluate a paid billing system than for companies seeking a self-serve starting point.

The platform is available through web and API access and connects with Stripe, QuickBooks, Bill.com, Salesforce, NetSuite, Avalara, Anrok, Numeral, Sphere, Stripe Tax, and TaxJar. Its capabilities cover recurring invoices, online payments, automated reminders, multi-currency support, and client portals. Invoice currency is configured per customer, with the invoice API requiring a match to that configured currency. Choose Orb when custom billing metrics, real-time usage data, and pricing-change workflows are central requirements; choose a simpler invoicing product when standard invoices and straightforward payment collection are sufficient.

Orb pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Custom SQL billable metrics support complex usage-based pricing.
    • Automates invoices, payment collection, reminders, and dunning workflows.
    • Connects billing with tax, accounting, CRM, and payment systems.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Pricing requires contacting sales rather than choosing a public plan price.
    • There is no free plan for smaller teams to start with.
    • Advanced integrations and premium support require higher-tier plans.
