  • Where it wins

    • Runs Rust WebAssembly workers alongside JavaScript and TypeScript
    • Supports PostgreSQL, S3-compatible storage, and key-value bindings
    • Offers Docker Compose self-hosting, custom domains, and scheduled handlers
  • Where it doesn't

    • Requires infrastructure operated and maintained by the user

    • Its strongest fit is self-hosted deployments, not managed hosting

Our verdict on OpenWorkers

OpenWorkers is an open-source serverless platform for teams that want to run JavaScript, TypeScript, and Rust-based WebAssembly workers on infrastructure they control. It uses a Rust runner with a V8-isolate runtime and supports Cloudflare Workers-compatible fetch handlers, giving developers a familiar request-handling model while keeping deployment self-hosted. The platform runs on the web, through an API, and in self-hosted environments, with Docker Compose available for deployment.

Its main strength is the combination of Rust WebAssembly support and persistent application services. Workers can connect to key-value storage, SQL databases backed by PostgreSQL, and S3-compatible object storage. The integration surface includes PostgreSQL, AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, MinIO, GitHub OAuth, and Cloudflare. Cron-based scheduled handlers, custom domains, and CLI-based worker deployment and administration extend it beyond request-response workloads. This makes OpenWorkers a practical match for operators building storage-backed services while retaining control over the runtime and infrastructure.

The trade-off is operational responsibility. OpenWorkers is primarily self-hosted, so teams must run and maintain the surrounding infrastructure rather than relying on a managed application-hosting service. The project is described as being in public beta, and WebSockets are also in beta, which matters for teams that need those capabilities as a settled part of production architecture. Choose OpenWorkers if open-source ownership, Rust WebAssembly workers, and infrastructure control are central requirements. Choose an alternative if you want a fully managed deployment experience or need mature WebSocket support as a core workload.
