Our verdict on Fly.io
Fly.io is a developer-focused public cloud for deploying applications as lightweight Fly Machines across worldwide regions. It is suited to teams running web applications, APIs, background processes, and other containerized workloads that need deployment locations close to users. Applications can be configured with fly.toml and deployed with fly deploy, using Dockerfiles, buildpacks, or existing container images. The platform supports web, API, and Linux workloads.
Pricing is usage-based rather than organized around conventional deployment tiers. The published plans show Machines Compute — shared-cpu-1x · 256MB at $1.94 per machine per month, billed by the second while a Machine runs. That monthly figure excludes storage and network charges. Optional support plans add paid service levels: Standard Support costs $29 per month with a 36-hour first response time and technical architecture support; Premium Support costs $199 per month with a 24-hour first response time, a dedicated Slack support channel, and quarterly solutions architecture sessions; Enterprise Support costs $2,500 per month with 24x7 support and a 99.9% uptime SLA.
Deployment control is a central strength. Fly.io supports rolling, canary, blue-green, and immediate strategies, while health checks can stop failed releases and previous images can be redeployed for rollback. Persistent volumes, secrets, private networking, application logs, and a Machines REST API extend the platform beyond basic release automation. Docker and GitHub Actions are listed integrations, but the overall integration and governance scope is narrower than platforms built around broad enterprise delivery controls. Choose Fly.io when low entry pricing, regional deployment, and flexible rollout strategies matter most; consider an alternative when self-hosting, wider integrations, or stronger governance features are priorities.
