OpenText SMAX, now presented as OpenText Service Management, is an IT service management platform for organizations coordinating IT services, assets, configuration items, and broader enterprise services. Its scope covers ITIL-aligned incident, problem, change, release, knowledge, service-level, catalog, and configuration management. Enterprises that need a shared service portal, workflow automation, native CMDB, audit controls, approval workflows, and mobile access will find the product aligned with those requirements. It also supports SaaS, on-premises, and public-cloud deployment options.

The published plans show two editions. OpenText Service Management Express includes core ITSM capabilities, service portal and mobile app access, reports and dashboards, an integration platform, Studio for creating workflow apps, and a native CMDB. OpenText Service Management Premium adds IT asset and procurement management, idea and proposal management, contract management, and vendor management. Pricing follows a contact-sales model, while the available hosted trial runs for 14 days. There is no permanent free plan, so buyers should plan for a sales-led evaluation and compare the required capabilities against the two editions.

Platform fit is a central strength. SMAX supports web, iOS, Android, API, and self-hosted environments, with integrations for OpenText ITOM, third-party products, AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Its codeless configuration covers forms, business rules, processes, notifications, and workflows, while automatic configuration-item detection and impact visibility connect service management with the CMDB. AI-assisted change analytics and change-success recommendations add depth for teams managing change risk. Choose SMAX when comprehensive ITIL service management and enterprise-wide service operations matter; smaller organizations seeking only a focused service catalog may prefer a narrower product.

OpenText SMAX pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Broad ITIL-aligned catalog, incident, change, knowledge, and CMDB capabilities
    • Codeless workflow configuration with self-service portal and mobile apps
    • AI-assisted change analytics plus multi-tenant deployment support
  • Where it doesn't
    • Pricing requires a sales conversation rather than a published entry price
    • The hosted trial lasts 14 days and there is no permanent free plan
    • Its broad scope may exceed the needs of teams seeking a narrow catalog tool
