Our verdict on OpenOcto
OpenOcto is a self-hosted assistant constructor for people who want voice interaction and control over an assistant's persona and components. It combines local wake-word detection, transcription and speech synthesis with configurable AI backends, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Its strongest fit is for solo users or small setups centered on voice and devices, rather than people seeking a broad, general-purpose chat assistant.
Its voice pipeline is the defining feature: wake-word detection supports configurable activation phrases, transcription uses whisper.cpp, and speech can use configurable Piper or Silero voices. Audio processing is designed to stay on the user's device. With Ollama and a local language model, OpenOcto can operate offline; Claude and OpenAI are also available as configurable backends. A browser-based setup wizard and admin panel provide configuration, while persona settings cover personality, voice and system prompt. Buyers should distinguish local audio processing from the choice of AI backend: offline operation is specifically described with a local model.
Home Assistant integration enables voice control of smart-home devices, while a Telegram bot supports remote commands and notifications. The product is free for personal and non-commercial use under Business Source License 1.1, which converts to Apache 2.0 on 2030-03-30. That license makes it a practical fit for personal self-hosting, but commercial users should assess the terms before adopting it. Choose OpenOcto if local voice control, persona customization and a self-hosted setup are central; choose another assistant if you need wider general-purpose capabilities or support beyond community channels.
