Our verdict on OpenClaw

OpenClaw connects messaging apps to AI agents through a Gateway that runs on a user's own machine or server. It is aimed at self-hosters who want a configurable agent gateway, along with solo users and teams seeking shared deployments. A browser Control UI supports chat, configuration, and sessions, while companion apps and mobile nodes extend access. Its focus is routing and deployment flexibility rather than a polished, hosted general assistant.

Its channel and runtime breadth is a central strength. OpenClaw integrates with Discord, Google Chat, iMessage, Matrix, Microsoft Teams, Signal, Slack, Telegram, WhatsApp, Zalo, and WebChat. Multi-agent routing and isolated sessions by workspace or sender support distinct contexts. Plugins can add channels, tools, providers, and other runtime capabilities. The system can handle inbound images, audio, video, and documents; configurable providers enable web search, text-to-speech, and voice interaction. Cron jobs, hooks, and webhooks cover scheduled tasks and automation. This is a good fit for buyers who value routing and customization across channels, but may be more configuration than someone seeking a straightforward assistant wants.

OpenClaw is open source and has a free plan, with no paid tier or hosted service from the project. Users must configure their own model provider and infrastructure, and may incur third-party model or hosting costs. Voice, search, and media capabilities also depend on configured providers, so the experience depends partly on those choices. Community and documentation are the stated support channels. Choose OpenClaw if self-hosting and connecting agents to multiple chat surfaces are priorities; consider another option if you want a managed service or a general assistant with less setup.
