Our verdict on OpenCA PKI
OpenCA PKI is open-source certification authority software for building and managing public key infrastructures. It is designed for self-hosted, on-premises deployments and provides CA and registration workflows, certificate issuance, request handling, revocation, CRL management, and web-based CA, RA, and public interfaces. It fits organizations that want control over a traditional PKI environment across Linux, macOS, and web access.
Its strongest area is the breadth of core certificate operations. OpenCA PKI supports SCEP enrollment, PKCS#10 and SPKAC request processing, configurable certificate extensions and roles, and integration with PKCS#11 hardware tokens. The surrounding ecosystem includes OpenLDAP, OpenSSL, Apache, Apache mod_ssl, and smartcard- or HSM-related hardware configurations. That combination suits teams connecting certificate workflows to established open-source infrastructure rather than looking for a narrowly focused certificate issuance tool.
The trade-off is operational ownership. Self-hosting gives organizations control over deployment, but it also puts infrastructure administration and maintenance on the adopting team. Documentation includes guidance for OpenCA 0.9.2, and some of that content is outdated, so teams should allow time to align implementation work with the current 1.5.1 release. Choose OpenCA PKI when an open-source, traditional CA platform with hardware-token integration is the priority. Consider another option if the preferred approach depends on a managed service or a more current, guided onboarding experience.
