Our verdict on OGAMA

OGAMA is a Windows desktop application for recording, importing, preprocessing, and analyzing eye- and mouse-tracking data in slideshow-based experiments. It is aimed at researchers who need a free, open-source environment for live studies or imported recordings, with support for hybrid eye and mouse tracking. The application can record directly with selected commercial eye trackers and the ITU Gazetracker, while ASCII import supports externally collected recordings. Its focus is research analysis rather than broad, cross-platform study management.

The analysis workflow covers several important stages. Database-driven preprocessing and filtering help organize gaze and mouse data before analysis, while areas of interest support focused examination of study regions. OGAMA also generates attention maps, calculates saliency and Levenshtein distances, and provides replay with AVI recording. These features give researchers multiple ways to inspect visual attention, compare interaction patterns, and review recorded sessions. Integrations with Tobii, alea, SMI, and ITU Gazetracker further connect the application to supported tracking hardware and software environments.

OGAMA’s clearest advantage is its open-source, no-cost distribution, especially for Windows-based research teams that need substantial recording and analysis functionality without a paid tier structure. The trade-offs are important: it does not extend beyond Windows, and the project’s regular support stopped in 2016, with Ogama 5.1 listed as the latest release published in 2021. Export detail is also less extensive than the rest of the analysis toolkit. Choose OGAMA when free Windows coverage, open-source access, and built-in visual-analysis methods are priorities. Consider an alternative when cross-platform operation, current regular support, or more detailed exports are central requirements.
