  • Where it wins

    • Combines block-level and bucket replication across drives, nodes, and sites
    • Supports active-active failover with automatic GET/HEAD failover
    • Includes IAM, versioning, retention, and SSE-C or SSE-S3 encryption
  • Where it doesn't

    • Self-hosted deployment requires infrastructure managed by the organization
    • Replication spans multiple layers, which may increase architectural complexity
    • Does not include AI features

Our verdict on Obstor

Obstor is an open-source, S3-compatible object storage server for organizations running self-hosted or distributed storage infrastructure. It combines S3 and SFTP access with IAM users, groups, policies, and service accounts. Its replication scope covers both block-level replication across drives and nodes and bucket replication between clusters or sites. The platform is aimed at teams that need on-premises control over object storage, multi-site replication, and S3-compatible tooling rather than a managed storage service.

Replication is the standout capability. Obstor supports asynchronous and synchronous bucket or object replication, continuous replication, active-active configurations, automatic retries, and automatic GET/HEAD failover. Its deployment model also supports cross-site infrastructure, while Docker Compose provides a distributed deployment option. This combination suits organizations that need replication across nodes or locations and want failover orchestration included in the storage layer. Teams seeking only a simple object store may find the mixed block and bucket scope broader than necessary.

The ecosystem fit is practical for S3-oriented environments. Obstor provides an S3-compatible object storage API and works with AWS SDK, aws-cli, rclone, restic, SFTP clients, and Veeam. Built-in SFTP access adds a separate path for file-oriented workflows, while object versioning, retention support, and server-side encryption with SSE-C and SSE-S3 address common storage-control requirements. Obstor should appeal to infrastructure teams comfortable operating self-hosted systems through binaries, Docker, Docker Compose, or Kubernetes-oriented infrastructure. Organizations wanting a fully managed service or AI-oriented capabilities should choose an alternative.
