Our verdict on NextWiki

NextWiki is an open-source wiki system for creating and managing knowledge bases. It is aimed at small teams and individuals who want Markdown page authoring, structured navigation, searchable content, and control over deployment. Pages can be organized with nested pages and folders, while tags and categories provide additional ways to group information. The product runs on the web and supports self-hosting, with deployment options that include cloud platforms such as Vercel or Netlify.

Its strongest area is core documentation organization. Full-text and fuzzy search help readers find pages, syntax highlighting supports technical documentation, and asset management covers images, videos, and PDFs. Pages and folders can be moved as a knowledge base evolves. Group and granular permissions provide control over access, and credential-based authentication is included. For teams that prefer an open-source system and want to manage their own hosting, this combination keeps the focus on writing, organizing, and sharing internal knowledge.

The trade-off is a narrower governance and ecosystem profile. Version history is not available, which limits change tracking and recovery, and SSO is not supported for centralized identity management. API access is listed, but integrations are not a central part of the documented feature set. NextWiki is therefore a good fit for small self-hosted Markdown documentation sites that value open-source deployment and granular permissions. Organizations requiring version history, SSO, or a broader integration layer should choose a wiki product built around those needs instead.
