Our verdict on NetGuard

NetGuard is an Android firewall for restricting internet access by application and address without requiring root access. It suits Android users who want direct control over which apps can connect through Wi-Fi or mobile networks, including system applications. The app uses Android’s VPNService to filter traffic locally on the device, and its free, open-source model makes it a practical fit for individuals who want granular outbound controls without deploying a separate network appliance.

Its strongest area is the depth of per-application visibility and control. Users can allow or block Wi-Fi and mobile access, receive application access notifications, record per-application network usage, and apply rules by address. The published feature set also includes outgoing traffic logging and PCAP export, while Pro features add filtering by address and application, application and network-speed notifications, and additional themes. These capabilities make NetGuard more useful than a simple app-wide network switch for users investigating or limiting outbound connections on one Android device.

The main trade-off is scope. NetGuard focuses on outbound traffic, so it is not a general inbound firewall, and its Android-only design does not provide a cross-platform control layer. It also does not offer central management for multiple devices. Optional one-time donations provide Pro features in GitHub and F-Droid builds, while Google Play lists in-app purchases. Choose NetGuard if free, open-source, no-root Android controls and local traffic records are the priority. Consider an alternative when inbound rule direction, multi-device administration, or broader platform coverage matters more than per-app outbound filtering.
