Our verdict on MySQL HeatWave

MySQL HeatWave is Oracle’s fully managed MySQL database service for teams running transactional applications alongside analytics, lakehouse queries, machine learning, or generative AI. It includes MySQL Enterprise Edition and runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, with availability on Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Web and API access support application and operational workflows, while optional high-availability deployments extend the service beyond basic database hosting.

The pricing model is freemium, with a free plan and a 30-day free trial. The Always Free offer includes 50 GB of storage and 50 GB of backup storage, giving smaller projects a way to run MySQL without an ongoing paid commitment. Paid use follows usage-based component pricing rather than a single cheapest paid tier, so costs depend on the selected database, compute, storage, backup, and HeatWave resources. Always Free DB systems do not include high availability or point-in-time recovery, which makes the free option better suited to development, evaluation, and workloads that can accept fewer recovery features.

Its main distinction is the breadth of the managed platform. In-memory query acceleration supports transactional and mixed workloads, while real-time analytics avoids ETL duplication and lakehouse queries can work against object storage. Integrated generative AI, vector storage, and machine learning add application options within the same service. Automated provisioning, scaling, patching, backups, recovery, elastic HeatWave cluster resizing, encryption, data masking, and a database firewall cover operational and security needs. Integrations with Oracle Analytics Cloud, Tableau, and Looker support analytics workflows. Choose MySQL HeatWave when advanced analytics, AI, and managed operations matter; choose a simpler MySQL host when the requirement is primarily a straightforward database with predictable entry pricing.
