Our verdict on Cloud SQL for MySQL

Cloud SQL for MySQL is a fully managed relational database service for running MySQL Community Edition databases on Google Cloud. It is designed for application teams and organizations running production MySQL workloads, including backends connected to web and API applications. Google Cloud manages infrastructure, maintenance, patching, backups, replication, encryption, monitoring, and storage capacity management.

Pricing is usage-based and varies by region, edition, provisioned CPU, memory, storage, and networking. The service is paid, has no free plan, and includes a 30-day free trial. Its Google Cloud fit is a central strength: integrations include Compute Engine, Cloud Run, Google Kubernetes Engine, BigQuery, Datastream, and Google Cloud Observability. These connections support application hosting, data movement, analytics, and logging and monitoring within the same cloud ecosystem.

For production operations, Cloud SQL for MySQL combines automated daily backups with point-in-time recovery, high availability with automatic failover across zones, read replicas, and cross-region replicas. Private IP connectivity supports private networking, while automatic storage increases reduce the need to manage capacity manually. Database migration is available from on-premises environments, Compute Engine, and other clouds. Choose it when managed MySQL and Google Cloud integration matter more than operating the database yourself; consider an alternative if you need a free plan, fixed pricing, or an open-source database service.
