Our verdict on Mulgara

Mulgara is an open-source RDF semantic store for applications that need to store, query, and relate metadata. It is suited to teams seeking a self-hosted RDF server with native graph storage, multiple databases or models per server, SPARQL and TQL querying, transactions, full-text search, and rule-based inference through the Krule engine. It can run as a standalone Java server or as an embedded database, giving developers a choice between a server deployment and application-level integration.

Mulgara’s open-source model keeps the product centered on self-hosted deployment rather than a tiered commercial plan structure. Its platform coverage includes web, Windows, macOS, Linux, API, and self-hosted use. The integration surface includes the Sesame SAIL API, JRDF, SOAP, HTTP, the Software Developers Kit, and JDBC through D2RQ. Resolvers can connect to local files, HTTP resources, remote Mulgara stores, and JDBC-backed data sources, which makes the product relevant when RDF workloads need to relate graph data to SQL-backed systems. RDF graph import and export support includes RDF/XML, N-Triples, and N3.

The main trade-off is operational ownership. Teams must manage a self-hosted server or embedded deployment, and the product’s published documentation is substantially dated. Mulgara is a practical fit for developers who need a traditional RDF platform with inference, persistence, transactions, web services, and several data-access paths in one system. It is less suitable for teams that want a hosted RDF service, a newer managed experience, or a narrowly focused graph store with minimal administration. Choose it when SQL-source access and broad server capabilities matter more than a modern onboarding experience.
