Our verdict on Moshi
Moshi is an experimental speech-text model and full-duplex dialogue framework from Kyutai. It is aimed at developers and researchers exploring real-time spoken AI, rather than people seeking a general-purpose assistant for writing, research, or file analysis. Its speech-native approach processes speech directly instead of converting it to text and back, supporting low-latency voice interaction. Kyutai describes it as a prototype, and provides an online browser demo for exploration.
The main distinction is its voice architecture: Moshi supports real-time, full-duplex spoken dialogue, with streaming neural audio codec integration through Mimi. That makes it relevant for experimentation with conversational audio, especially where responses need to stream while a conversation is in progress. The documented language support is English. Buyers looking for web search, file uploads, image input, or deep research should choose a different assistant; Moshi is not positioned as a broad text-and-file productivity tool.
Its open-source release includes PyTorch, Rust, and MLX inference implementations. The MLX implementation supports on-device inference on iPhone and Mac, while the product is also available through a browser demo and can be self-hosted. This gives technical users several routes to explore the model, from a hosted demonstration to local implementation work. Choose Moshi if your priority is experimenting with spoken interaction and inference options; look elsewhere if you need a finished general assistant with research or document-analysis capabilities.
