Our verdict on MoneyWorks
MoneyWorks is accounting software from Cognito Software Ltd for small businesses and larger organisations, including salons that need more than basic bookkeeping. Its core coverage includes general ledger, cashbook, receivables, payables, invoicing, bank-statement imports, reconciliation, tax management and financial reporting. The product is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and through an API, with desktop, self-hosted network and hosted cloud deployments across its product range.
The plan structure spans focused bookkeeping through to broader operational accounting. MoneyWorks Cashbook provides a single-user cashbook and general ledger, while Express adds invoicing and statements. Gold adds multicurrency, job costing, advanced inventory management and cost-centre accounting. Datacentre supports networked access with either a single company file or multiple company files. Perpetual licence options are available for Express, Gold and Datacentre; the Datacentre 9 perpetual licence includes three concurrent users. The published plans also show free access and a 45-day trial.
MoneyWorks stands out for the breadth of its accounting workflow and its fit with established office systems. It supports receipt and scanned-document storage, GST, VAT and sales-tax management, profit and loss, cashflow, trial balance and balance-sheet reports, plus custom reports, forms, dashboards and scripting. Integrations include Microsoft Excel, Word and Office, Apple Numbers, FileMaker, Microsoft Access, email clients and REST APIs. Bank feeds are available in Australia and New Zealand for an additional monthly charge, while the US version does not support GST, VAT or HST-style taxes. Salons needing inventory, job costing or multicurrency should consider Gold; smaller operations may prefer Cashbook or Express.
