Our verdict on Meridian

Meridian is a native Git client for macOS designed for individual developers reviewing and committing changes locally. It opens repositories and worktrees from the terminal with mrd, supports file- and hunk-level staging, and covers commit, amend, undo, branch, merge, cherry-pick, revert, reset and stash operations. Its document-oriented diffs extend beyond source code to Markdown, images, SVG, CSV and JSON, while conflict resolution can use ours, theirs or both.

The pricing model is straightforward: the Meridian licence costs $29 as a one-time payment. Personal and commercial use are included, one licence covers three Macs, and 12 months of updates come with the purchase. The app continues working after the update period. There is no free plan, but the product includes a 14-day free trial. That makes Meridian a reasonable fit for Mac developers who want a dedicated desktop client without a recurring licence, while teams seeking a free option should look elsewhere.

Meridian shells out to system Git, allowing existing SSH keys, credential helpers, hooks and commit-signing settings to continue working. Its history view spans branches and supports per-file history across renames, and individual-file stashes add control during local changes. The focus is narrow: Meridian does not currently support Git LFS or submodules, and its platform support is limited to macOS. Choose it for local Git review, staging and history with rendered document diffs; consider an alternative if large-file workflows, nested repositories or broader operating-system support are essential.
