Our verdict on Memcached

Memcached is a free, open-source distributed memory object caching system for applications that need to reduce load from database calls, API calls, or page rendering. It stores small arbitrary values in an in-memory key-value store, with applications connecting through text, Meta Text, or binary protocols. The deployment model is self-hosted, with support for Linux, macOS, APIs, and other self-managed environments.

Its strongest technical case is breadth within object caching. Memcached provides distributed client-side server selection, LRU eviction, item expiration, cache invalidation, and commands for compare-and-swap, storage, retrieval, deletion, and statistics. The Meta protocol adds anti-stampede and stale-serving mechanisms, while an optional built-in proxy can route requests across backend pools. Warm restart, persistent-memory support, and optional flash-backed external storage extend how cached data can be handled beyond a purely volatile setup.

Memcached suits teams that want a focused, protocol-driven cache under their own operational control. The core servers are independent and do not replicate data, so applications that require replicated cache contents should choose a different architecture or alternative product. Fault-tolerance capability applies to the optional built-in proxy, and warm restart requires a clean shutdown. Choose Memcached for mature self-hosted object caching with flexible protocols and eviction behavior; avoid it when a broad managed ecosystem or built-in replication is central to the requirement.
