Our verdict on Maturin

Maturin is an open-source command-line tool and PEP 517 build backend for packaging Rust projects as Python packages. It is aimed at developers who need to turn Rust code into distributable Python wheels or source distributions, including projects using PyO3, cffi, uniffi, or Rust binary bindings. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and can install built packages into the current virtual environment for development. Maturin is a focused packaging tool rather than a complete Python dependency-management solution.

Its strongest fit is the Rust-to-Python build workflow. Maturin builds wheels and can create source distributions with the --sdist option, while Cargo.lock enforcement is available through --locked and --frozen. For distribution across Linux environments, it supports manylinux and musllinux compatibility checks and repair. Zig-based cross-compilation extends the build workflow across platforms, and generated GitHub Actions workflows can help connect packaging tasks to CI. These capabilities give Rust projects a direct path from source code to Python package artifacts without broadening the product into environment management.

Maturin also connects with PyPI, GitHub Actions, Docker, uv, and pip. It supports publishing workflows for PyPI, while the current documentation recommends uv for publishing built packages. Development installs can use Python dependency groups, which is useful when a project needs organized development dependencies alongside its Rust build process. Choose Maturin when Rust is central to the package and you need wheels, source distributions, binding support, or cross-platform build options. Choose another tool when your priority is general-purpose Python dependency resolution or environment management rather than Rust-backed package construction.
