Our verdict on MapTool
MapTool is a free, open-source virtual tabletop for tabletop roleplaying games played in person or remotely. It suits groups that want to create detailed battle maps, manage tokens, track initiative, and connect remote players without a paid plan. The game-system-agnostic design also gives groups room to adapt campaigns and frameworks to different roleplaying systems. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux as a downloadable desktop application.
Its strongest area is tactical map control. MapTool combines map creation and token management with token properties for health and status tracking, initiative tracking, and tools for vision, lighting, and fog of war. Topology features let groups define walls, pits, hills, and line-of-sight control. Macros, an included scripting language, and embedded HTML support extend the tabletop beyond basic map display, giving technically inclined groups ways to customize campaign behavior and presentation.
The platform fit is clear but specific: MapTool is desktop-first, with an integrated server for connecting remote players rather than a browser-based service. Its free plan includes virtual tabletop functionality, remote-player hosting, map creation, token management, vision and lighting tools, and scripting and macro support. Groups comfortable with downloadable software and campaign customization should find its broad tactical toolkit well aligned with open-ended roleplaying sessions. Groups seeking mobile apps or a browser-based tabletop should choose a different option.
