Our verdict on MacroPhase

MacroPhase is an Android nutrition tracker for people who want to record food, calories, macros, micronutrients, and weight without creating an account. Food can be logged through search, barcode scanning, serving sizes, grams, or saved amounts. For solo users who want more than a calorie total, its combination of detailed nutrition tracking and weight-trend estimates makes it worth considering; it is not a fit for people seeking an iOS app or an established app-store download.

The notable feature is its approach to adjusting targets. MacroPhase estimates energy expenditure from food history and weight trends, then proposes weekly calorie-target changes for the user to review. That makes it more than a static logging tool, while keeping the adjustment as a suggestion rather than an automatic change. Food search uses local databases, including USDA Foundation Foods, with optional regional database packs. The Phase coach is optional and can support natural-language meal logging, photo analysis, recipe creation, and trend queries. Users can connect Gemini, OpenAI-compatible providers, Anthropic, or OpenRouter for AI features.

Platform and data portability are central to the trade-off. Health Connect read and write support connects the app with Android’s health data ecosystem, while CSV and JSON import and export offer a way to move records or keep backups. MacroPhase is free during its closed beta, but distribution is by sideloaded APK, which requires installing outside a standard app-store flow. Support is through community and documentation. Choose it if free Android tracking, export, and configurable AI options matter more than a conventional installation path; choose another tracker if you need broader platform availability or a standard store release.
