Our verdict on LXC

LXC is free, open-source container software for creating and managing system and application containers on Linux. It provides command-line lifecycle tools, an API through liblxc, language bindings, distribution templates, and remote image downloads. Its design suits Linux administrators, infrastructure engineers, and developers who need container environments that resemble standard Linux installations without a separate kernel. Both privileged and unprivileged containers are supported, making it relevant to different isolation and permission models.

The strongest part of LXC is its low-level control surface. Linux namespaces provide process isolation, while control groups manage resources. AppArmor and SELinux profiles, seccomp policies, capabilities, and chroots add further controls around containerized workloads. Virtualized container networking is included, and the project supports creating OCI images through an OCI container-creation template. These capabilities make LXC a fit for teams that value direct access to Linux containment features and programmable lifecycle management rather than a higher-level hosted workflow.

LXC is distributed as free software and does not use a paid-plan structure. Its platform fit is deliberately narrow: Linux is the host operating system, with API and self-hosted usage supported. The project offers image building, rootless operation, and both system- and application-container workflows, but it has no AI features and is not designed as a commercial hosted service. Pick LXC when Linux-native control, open-source operation, and system-container behavior are priorities. Choose another option when Windows containers, managed hosting, or a broader cross-platform experience are central requirements.
