Our verdict on LoxiLB

LoxiLB is an open-source software load balancer for Kubernetes, edge, telco, and hybrid-cloud workloads. It is designed for teams operating Linux-based, self-hosted, public-cloud, on-premises, or bare-metal environments. Layer 4 balancing supports NAT44, NAT66, and NAT64, while Layer 7 HTTP proxying is available through Kubernetes Ingress. The software can run inside or outside Kubernetes clusters, or in standalone mode, giving infrastructure teams several deployment patterns without shifting to a paid tier model.

Its strongest fit is the Kubernetes ecosystem. LoxiLB supports Kubernetes LoadBalancer services and Gateway API, along with K3s, K0s, Amazon EKS, MicroK8s, and Red Hat OpenShift. Integrations with Calico, Flannel, Cilium, Multus, GoBGP, Prometheus, and Grafana extend its fit across networking, routing, and observability workflows. The Kubernetes operator and eBPF-based datapath are particularly relevant for teams that want a cloud-native networking layer with configurable endpoint probes, sticky endpoint selection, and multiple balancing algorithms.

The feature set also reaches into availability and network control. High-availability clustering and hitless failover support continuity, while BGP integration through GoBGP supports routing-oriented deployments. Stateful firewalling, IPsec, and WireGuard add network security functions alongside load balancing, and TLS termination is supported. LoxiLB should appeal to Kubernetes and platform teams that want open-source control over L4 networking with optional L7 ingress. Teams seeking a broadly managed load-balancing service or a product centered outside self-hosted container environments should look elsewhere.
