Our verdict on LightMap

LightMap is a realtime media engine and server for projection mapping across stages, theaters, events, architectural installations, digital signage and VJ work. It is aimed at stage and lighting designers, event planners, artists and teams managing fixed installations that need automated or synchronized media playback. Its feature set covers projection mapping for two- and three-dimensional objects, realtime compositing, live video and audio capture, multiple outputs, soft-edge blending, scheduling, cues and playlists.

Integration is a central part of the product. LightMap can connect with DMX, Art-Net, sACN, OSC, PJLink, TCP, UDP and NDI workflows, giving installations several options for lighting control, projector and display control, device communication and media transport. Browser-based configuration supports networked operation, while frame synchronization across multiple devices is suited to coordinated multi-display environments. The plans divide the emphasis: LightMap Core includes live video and broad control protocols; LightMap Server adds a pre-installed Mac Mini and synchronization or timecode; LightMap Speech adds live speech transcription.

LightMap is broader than a simple mapping tool, combining playback automation, live capture, control protocols and synchronized output in one system. That breadth suits productions and installations where media, lighting and display behavior need to work together. The trade-off is a focused platform footprint: it is offered for web and macOS, so teams requiring wider native desktop coverage should consider alternatives. Buyers should also account for the paid model and the limited trial period described for the free version. LightMap is the stronger fit for networked, protocol-driven installations; simpler projection setups may not need its full control and synchronization scope.
