Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There is no single best projection mapping software tool in 2026: MadMapper is the strongest dedicated mapper, Resolume Arena suits live VJ shows, HeavyM is easiest for beginners, TouchDesigner leads interactive work, and Millumin fits Mac-based theater. MapMap and VPT are free starting points, while Isadora is built for interactive performance.
The right choice depends on four practical questions: how complex the surfaces are, whether visuals must be mixed live or triggered from cues, whether the project needs sensors or generative graphics, and whether the software will be used commercially. The eight tools below are an editorial shortlist organized by workflow, not an objective industry ranking.
Key takeaways
- MadMapper is the best dedicated projection-mapping choice for architectural surfaces, sculptures, installations, and LED-oriented workflows.
- Resolume Arena is the better choice for live VJ performance, while Resolume Avenue is a separate, more VJ-focused edition and should not be treated as interchangeable with Arena.
- HeavyM offers the lowest-friction no-code workflow, but its output, resolution, edge-blending, and integration features vary by edition.
- TouchDesigner Non-Commercial is free only for personal, educational, or evaluation use; paid work requires a Commercial or Pro license.
- Millumin is a Mac-only timeline and show-control application with a 30-day unrestricted trial that later adds a watermark.
- MapMap and VPT are useful free experimenters, but neither should be assumed to provide the support, integrations, or production reliability of commercial media servers.

What is projection-mapping software?
Projection-mapping software is an application that reshapes, masks, composites, and routes images or video so that projected content aligns with physical surfaces. Playing a video full-screen is not enough: a mapping application must account for the geometry of a wall, sculpture, stage set, building, or other object.

Depending on the product, projection mapping software can provide perspective correction, corner pinning, polygon masks, mesh or Bezier warping, multiple surfaces, multiple outputs, layer blending, media playback, edge blending, and projector-overlap management. More advanced applications also accept cameras, NDI, Syphon, Spout, SDI, screen capture, MIDI, OSC, DMX, Art-Net, timecode, Arduino, or other sensors.
The category contains several different types of application:
- Mapping and playback tools: MadMapper is primarily designed around mapping video and LED surfaces.
- VJ and media-server tools: Resolume Arena combines live clip mixing and effects with advanced mapping.
- Generative environments: TouchDesigner creates procedural, real-time, and sensor-driven graphics.
- Timeline and show-control platforms: Millumin is designed for cues, timelines, and multimedia shows.
- Visual-programming environments: Isadora combines media playback with interactive logic.
- Entry-level mapping tools: HeavyM, MapMap, and VPT prioritize simpler mapping or lower cost.
How should you choose projection mapping software?
The best projection mapping software is the one that supports the actual show workflow without imposing unnecessary licensing, hardware, or learning costs. Evaluate these capabilities before buying.
Mapping and output
Check whether the application supports the geometry you need: corner pinning for simple rectangles, polygon masks for irregular shapes, mesh or Bezier warping for more complex surfaces, and 3D or surface-based workflows where available. Multi-projector work may additionally require edge blending, output synchronization, calibration, multiple GPUs, or a dedicated media server.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Playback and compositing
Live performers usually need layers, clip triggering, blend modes, effects, looping, playlists, audio-reactive controls, and fast recovery. Theater teams may value timelines, cues, timecode, and autonomous playback more than improvisational clip mixing.
Control and interaction
Look for MIDI, OSC, DMX or Art-Net, timecode, camera input, tracking, sensors, scripting, and node-based programming only when the production actually needs them. More control options can also mean more setup, testing, and failure points.
Licensing
Separate a genuinely free commercial tool from a non-commercial edition, a time-limited trial, and a demo that restricts output. Check watermarks, resolution limits, DMX blackouts, commercial-use restrictions, update policies, seat limits, and whether a license can be moved between computers.
Reliability
A production application should be tested on the exact computer, GPU, projectors, cables, media, and output resolution used at the venue. Vendor stability guidance is useful but is not a substitute for a full-show test. Derivative recommends official builds rather than experimental builds when stability is important for live shows and installations; its documentation identified Official Build 2025.33070 dated July 16, 2026 during the research pass. See the official TouchDesigner download page for current build information.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →1. MadMapper: best dedicated projection-mapping software
MadMapper is the best fit when accurate surface mapping is the main job. MadMapper is purpose-built for video and LED mapping rather than adding mapping as a secondary feature to a general VJ application.
Why choose MadMapper?
MadMapper suits architectural mapping, sculptures, installations, complex physical objects, and multi-surface projects that combine pre-rendered media with live inputs. Its dedicated warping and masking workflow is easier to justify when geometric accuracy matters more than building custom generative logic.
- Dedicated warping and masking tools.
- Video- and LED-oriented workflows.
- Support for macOS and Windows.
- Useful combination of prepared content and live inputs.
The official MadMapper specifications and demo page describes a demo that exposes the feature set but applies restrictions including watermarked output and periodic DMX blackout behavior. The same page showed rental pricing from €39 per month excluding tax during the August 2026 research pass; verify one-time purchase pricing and current license terms before buying.
Limitations
MadMapper is less suited than Resolume Arena for clip-deck-style VJ performance and less suited than TouchDesigner or Isadora for complex custom interactivity. A demo is not a production license, and “installed on any system” should not be interpreted as permission for simultaneous use on multiple computers without checking the current terms.

2. Resolume Arena: best for live VJ performance
Resolume Arena is the best choice for operators who trigger clips, mix layers, apply effects, and map outputs in real time. Concerts, clubs, festivals, DJs, VJs, and live visual shows benefit from Resolume’s performance-first workflow.
What is the difference between Resolume Avenue and Arena?
Resolume Avenue is the VJ-oriented edition; Arena adds advanced projection-mapping and show-control capabilities. Avenue and Arena are not interchangeable when the project specifically requires Arena’s advanced mapping functions.
Resolume is strong at clip and layer triggering, real-time effects, live compositing, and rapid improvisation. Resolume also has a large ecosystem of visual content and tutorials, which can shorten the path from installation to a working live set.
The official Resolume shop displayed €299 for Avenue and €799 for Arena. Resolume licenses work on macOS and Windows, purchases include free updates for 12 months, and the last eligible update continues to work after that period. The trial adds a Resolume watermark and a robot voice to audio output, so the trial is not an unrestricted free edition.
Limitations
Arena costs more than beginner-focused tools and is not primarily a 3D design or generative-programming environment. Readers who need precise architectural calibration may prefer MadMapper, while readers who need sensor-driven procedural graphics may prefer TouchDesigner.
3. HeavyM: best for beginners and no-code setup
HeavyM is the best beginner-friendly option for users who want built-in effects and a relatively approachable interface. HeavyM is suitable for first mapping projects, events, stage visuals, and installations where fast setup matters more than maximum technical flexibility.
What does HeavyM include?
HeavyM provides built-in effects, media playlists, sequencing, transitions, and music-reactive features. Higher editions add capabilities such as additional outputs, higher maximum resolution, edge blending, NDI, DeckLink, OSC, DMX, export, and automation. Those features vary by edition, so the software edition must be matched to the venue requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
According to the official HeavyM software page, the Live edition is limited to one output and 1920×1200 resolution. The same page lists Windows 8/10/11 64-bit and macOS 10.15 or later, with minimum requirements of an Intel Core i5-class processor, 4 GB RAM, and a GPU with 2 GB VRAM. Recommended GPU examples include an NVIDIA GTX 1060, AMD RX580, or Apple M1.
Limitations
The most affordable edition may not support professional multi-projector work. A demo helps with learning but should not be treated as a free production version. Verify current operating-system support because the vendor’s Windows list includes older versions.
Choose HeavyM over TouchDesigner when no-code operation and built-in effects matter more than procedural control. Choose HeavyM over MapMap when a more accessible interface and paid vendor workflow justify the cost.
4. TouchDesigner: best for generative and interactive installations
TouchDesigner is the strongest choice for technical artists who need custom real-time graphics, sensors, tracking, cameras, procedural content, or interactive installations. TouchDesigner can build projection systems that simpler mapping applications cannot reproduce without external programming.

Is TouchDesigner free for commercial projection mapping?
No. TouchDesigner Non-Commercial is free for personal, educational, or evaluation use, but paid work requires a Commercial or Pro license. The free edition is limited to 1280×1280 output resolution and omits some commercial/pro operators. According to Derivative’s official TouchDesigner product information, the research snapshot listed Educational at $300, Commercial at $600, and Pro at $2,200.
TouchDesigner is especially useful for procedural graphics, GPU-heavy compositing, camera and sensor input, tracking, data-driven visuals, and custom pipelines. Its non-commercial edition makes it a valuable learning platform, but its free status does not make it suitable for a paid event, client installation, commissioned artwork, or compensated show.
Limitations
TouchDesigner has a steep learning curve and is not a quick substitute for MadMapper when the task is simply manual surface alignment. The 1280×1280 cap can also make the free edition unsuitable for testing a full-resolution production. Higher license tiers or third-party integrations may be needed for specialized synchronization, calibration, or production features.
Choose TouchDesigner over Isadora when procedural and GPU-oriented graphics are central. Choose Isadora when the team wants visual programming and interaction with a more media-performance-oriented workflow.
5. Millumin: best for Mac-based theater and scripted shows
Millumin is the best fit for Mac-based theater, dance, museums, multimedia performance, and installations that depend on timelines, cues, and show sequencing. Millumin is designed for pre-programmed productions rather than purely improvised VJ sets.
What makes Millumin useful for theater?
Millumin V5 includes timelines, multiple canvases, output warping, masks, perspective transforms, DMX, LED pixel mapping, laser support, MIDI, OSC, timecode, Arduino, and other integrations. The official site lists support for multiple displays up to 16K, subject to the computer hardware.
Millumin’s official product page states that Millumin V5 requires macOS Big Sur 11 or later and is optimized for Intel and Apple Silicon. Millumin is Mac-only; the vendor states that there is no Windows or Linux version.
Millumin provides a 30-day free trial without limitation, after which a watermark appears on output. During the August 2026 research pass, the official site displayed rental licenses of €29 for seven days, €69 for 30 days, and €199 for one year, plus lifetime licenses starting at €399, before applicable tax.
Limitations
Mac-only availability is a major buying constraint. A Windows-based team should not select Millumin without changing its hardware plan. Users who need deep procedural graphics may need TouchDesigner or an integration with another system. Rental and lifetime prices also make Millumin’s long-term cost structure different from Resolume’s perpetual-license model.
6. Isadora: best for interactive audiovisual performance
Isadora is the best choice for artists who want visual programming that combines media playback, interaction, and live control. Isadora is suited to interactive theater, dance, performance art, sensor-driven installations, and live video or audio manipulation.
TroikaTronix presents Isadora as a real-time audiovisual platform that combines media-server functionality with a visual programming environment. Its actor-based workflow lets artists connect media, logic, performers, sensors, and external devices without building an entire application from conventional source code.
The official TroikaTronix site offers a free Demo Mode for exploring Isadora before purchase. Demo Mode should not be described as an unrestricted free production license. Current pricing should be taken from the official store at publication time rather than copied from older third-party articles.
Rank #4
- HIGH-BRIGHTNESS FHD LASER PROJECTOR: This projector delivers Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution and 5,500 ANSI lumens with a 1.13-1.47 throw ratio for bright, detailed images in boardrooms, classrooms, lecture halls, and golf simulators.
- GOLF MODE FOR REALISTIC SIMULATION: Designed for immersive play, this laser projector supports major golf simulators while its laser phosphor light source provides up to 30,000 hours of operation in Dynamic Eco mode.

- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY: Dual HDMI 1.4 inputs, USB Type A, RS232 control, audio out, and a built-in 15W speaker make this business projector ready for compatible presentation systems, media devices, and installed environments.
Limitations
Isadora is not primarily an architectural-mapping specialist. A project involving highly complex surfaces may need a separate mapping workflow or additional setup. Isadora is a stronger recommendation when interaction and visual logic are central than when the only requirement is precise projector alignment.
7. MapMap: best free and open-source option
MapMap is the best starting point for readers who need genuinely free basic projection mapping and can accept fewer professional features. MapMap is appropriate for students, hobbyists, classroom experiments, and simple 2D mapping of images or videos onto surfaces.
MapMap should not be presented as a full replacement for MadMapper, Resolume Arena, or TouchDesigner. Expect fewer advanced integrations, less commercial support, and potentially more manual setup. Open-source software can be free in licensing terms without being easy to install, actively maintained, or reliable on every modern GPU.
Check the official MapMap project site immediately before installation for current downloads, supported operating systems, release activity, and output limitations. Those details are more version-sensitive than the basic description of MapMap’s role as a free/open-source mapping tool.
Recommended Free Tools
8. VPT: best free Windows tool for basic mapping
VPT is a free Windows-oriented option for simple video mapping and experimentation, provided the reader accepts a more utilitarian workflow. VPT can suit beginners, small-scale experiments, basic surface warping, and users who need to test the concept without paying for a commercial application.
VPT should not be positioned as equivalent to a modern commercial media server. Its maintenance status, compatibility with current Windows and GPU environments, multi-projector behavior, edge blending, and advanced integrations must be verified before a high-stakes production.
Check the official VPT project page for current availability and documentation. If the page is unavailable or maintenance cannot be confirmed on publication day, choose a better-documented free tool rather than assuming that “free to download” means production-ready.
Which projection mapping software is best for each use case?
| Use case | Best recommendation | Why | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated architectural or sculpture mapping | MadMapper | Mapping-first warping, masking, and surface workflow | Choosing a generative tool when alignment is the only requirement |
| Concerts, clubs, festivals, and VJ sets | Resolume Arena | Fast clip triggering, layers, effects, and live improvisation | Assuming Avenue includes Arena’s advanced mapping features |
| First projection-mapping project | HeavyM | No-code workflow, built-in effects, playlists, and sequencing | Buying the lowest edition without checking outputs and resolution |
| Generative or sensor-driven installation | TouchDesigner | Procedural graphics, tracking, cameras, data, and custom logic | Using Non-Commercial for paid work |
| Mac theater or dance production | Millumin | Timelines, cues, timecode, multiple canvases, and show automation | Ignoring its Mac-only status |
| Interactive performance with visual programming | Isadora | Media playback combined with interaction and external control | Expecting it to be a dedicated architectural calibrator |
| Zero-budget basic mapping | MapMap | Free and open source | Expecting commercial support or advanced integrations |
| Zero-budget Windows experiment | VPT | Free Windows-oriented basic mapping | Assuming current compatibility without testing |
Are free projection mapping tools enough for commercial work?
Free projection mapping tools are enough for learning and some simple projects, but “free” describes several different licensing situations. A free commercial tool can be used for paid work; a free non-commercial edition cannot. A trial may expire or watermark the output, while an open-source application may require more technical setup and provide less support.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Free status | What it means | Example in this list | Commercial warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free non-commercial edition | Free within personal, educational, or evaluation limits | TouchDesigner Non-Commercial | Paid work requires Commercial or Pro |
| Free trial | Temporary access, possibly unrestricted or restricted | Millumin, Resolume | Test clean output and final hardware before the event |
| Demo mode | Explore the application with output or feature restrictions | MadMapper, HeavyM, Isadora | Watermarks, blackouts, or other restrictions can invalidate a show test |
| Free/open source | No commercial purchase price under the project’s license | MapMap | Maintenance, support, installation, and compatibility may be limited |
| Free utility or project | Available without a standard commercial license | VPT | Current availability and Windows compatibility must be verified |
Before committing to a free edition, determine whether the client, venue, sponsor, ticketed event, commissioned artwork, or paid installation makes the work commercial. Confirm whether the software can output the required resolution, remove its watermark, run DMX continuously, save and deploy the show, and operate across the number of computers required.
Do you need content-creation software as well?
Most projection projects need both content creation and live mapping or playback. Blender, Cinema 4D, Unreal Engine, and After Effects can create rendered scenes, animations, textures, and previsualizations, but they are not automatically substitutes for software that performs live warping, output routing, cueing, and projector alignment.
A practical workflow may use Blender, Cinema 4D, Unreal, or After Effects to create content, then MadMapper, Resolume, Millumin, or TouchDesigner to map and play that content. Larger productions may also add a media server, projector-calibration system, lighting console, or show-control platform.
QLab can be a strong Mac playback and show-control alternative, but it is not a direct replacement for every dedicated mapping workflow. Enterprise platforms such as disguise, PIXERA, Notch, Green Hippo, and Christie systems may fit large venues, touring productions, permanent attractions, or media-server deployments, but they are outside the practical price and accessibility range of most beginners and small installations.

What hardware and venue conditions affect the result?
Projection mapping software cannot compensate for every physical limitation. Projector placement, lens shift, throw distance, surface texture and color, ambient light, brightness, black-level mismatch, overlap, cable bandwidth, GPU outputs, heat, dust, and venue reliability all affect the final image.
- Use a GPU with enough performance, VRAM, and physical outputs for the final resolution and number of layers.
- Confirm that the computer has the required HDMI, DisplayPort, SDI, NDI, or capture hardware.
- Use the projector’s native resolution in the software canvas where possible.
- Plan for projector brightness, ambient light, surface color, and black-level differences.
- Lock projector positions and mark them physically after alignment.
- For multiple projectors, investigate edge blending, synchronization, calibration, genlock or frame-lock, multiple GPUs, and backup playback.
- Test the complete show at the venue’s final resolution rather than testing only a short low-resolution clip.
A software license does not include projectors, calibration hardware, media servers, signal extenders, content, or venue engineering. Multi-projector synchronization is a system-design problem, not a guarantee provided by buying one application license.
How do you fix common projection-mapping problems?
The output is warped incorrectly
Incorrect warping usually comes from a canvas-resolution mismatch, mirrored displays, projector-side keystone correction, a changed aspect ratio, or a projector that moved after alignment.
- Disable unnecessary projector-side keystone correction.
- Set the software canvas to the projector’s native resolution.
- Use extended desktop mode instead of display mirroring.
- Display a grid or test pattern and realign the mapping points.
- Lock the projector and mark its physical position.
Playback stutters
Stuttering commonly results from high-bitrate media, a slow external drive, GPU saturation, too many simultaneous layers, an output resolution beyond the hardware, or an unsuitable codec.
The Tool Desk

- Avoid relying on an integrated GPU for demanding multi-output work.
- Keep media on a fast internal or suitably fast external SSD.
The free version worked during setup but fails at the show
The cause may be a watermark, resolution cap, non-commercial restriction, DMX blackout, output timeout, trial expiration, or missing commercial operator. Confirm the license before producing final content, then test clean output on the exact computer and projector that will be used.
The application crashes during a live show
Use official or stable builds, preload and test all media, disable unnecessary background applications and automatic updates, save multiple project versions, and prepare a backup machine or emergency video loop. Test projector and cable reconnection before the event rather than discovering the recovery behavior during a performance.
How should you make the final choice?
- Need dedicated mapping? Start with MadMapper.
- Need live VJ mixing? Choose Resolume Arena, not Avenue, when advanced Arena mapping or show-control features are required.
- Need the easiest setup? Try HeavyM and verify that the selected edition supports the required outputs.
- Need interactive or generative work? Choose TouchDesigner for maximum custom control or Isadora for visual-programming performance workflows.
- Need a Mac timeline show? Choose Millumin.
- Need a genuinely free basic mapper? Test MapMap or VPT on the intended computer.
- Need commercial deployment? Remove non-commercial editions from the shortlist immediately and test the paid license on the final hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best projection mapping software in 2026?
MadMapper is the best dedicated projection-mapping choice in this shortlist, but Resolume Arena is better for live VJ performance, HeavyM is easier for beginners, TouchDesigner is stronger for generative installations, and Millumin is better for Mac-based theater. The best option depends on the workflow rather than a universal ranking.
Is TouchDesigner free for commercial projection mapping?
No. TouchDesigner Non-Commercial is free for personal, educational, or evaluation use, but paid work requires a Commercial or Pro license. The Non-Commercial edition also has a 1280×1280 output limit and omits some commercial/pro operators.
What is the difference between Resolume Avenue and Resolume Arena?
Resolume Avenue is the VJ-oriented edition, while Resolume Arena adds advanced projection-mapping and show-control capabilities. Avenue and Arena should not be treated as interchangeable when a production needs Arena-specific mapping features.
Which projection mapping software is free?
MapMap and VPT are free starting points, while TouchDesigner has a free non-commercial edition. MadMapper, Resolume, HeavyM, Millumin, and Isadora provide demos or trials with different restrictions, so a demo or trial is not the same as a free production license.
Can projection mapping software create the video content too?
Some applications can generate or manipulate visuals, but many projects still use Blender, Cinema 4D, Unreal Engine, or After Effects to create content and MadMapper, Resolume, Millumin, or TouchDesigner to warp, route, cue, and play that content.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose MadMapper for dedicated mapping, Resolume Arena for live VJ performance, HeavyM for the easiest no-code start, TouchDesigner for custom interactive graphics, Millumin for Mac theater, Isadora for interactive audiovisual performance, and MapMap or VPT for free basic experimentation.
