Our verdict on LDtk

LDtk is a free, open-source desktop level editor for developers building 2D games. Its feature set covers tile-based painting, integer grid data, configurable entities with custom fields, automatic tile rendering, and world organization. The editor is particularly suited to structured platformer and top-down projects that need more than basic tile placement, while commercial use is permitted without licensing fees.

Pricing is straightforward: the Free plan is pay what you want, including free, with no hidden fee and commercial use permitted. The published plan provides the complete listed feature set, including tile layers, entity layers, rule-based auto-layers, world layouts, JSON export, backup support, and crash recovery. That makes LDtk a practical option when a project needs a capable 2D editor without a recurring software cost.

Its ecosystem fit is a central strength. LDtk provides documented JSON data structures, optional Tiled TMX export, and integrations spanning Unity, MonoGame, Godot, Playdate, GameMaker Studio, LÖVE 2D, Bevy, and multiple programming languages, including C#, C++, JavaScript, Haskell, Go, and Python. Aseprite file loading with live reloading also supports an art workflow built around changing bitmap assets. Choose LDtk if you want structured 2D authoring with flexible engine and language integration. Choose another tool if your project requires 3D level editing or a non-desktop workflow.
