Our verdict on 2D Tiler

2D Tiler is a browser-based, open-source editor for creating layered 2D game maps and preparing the assets around them. It is aimed at indie game developers who need tilemap editing, terrain rules, object placement, pixel image editing, palette handling, and export options in one web-based workspace. The editor runs locally in the browser and is available free under the MIT license, making it a practical fit for developers who want an open-source 2D tool without a paid plan structure.

Its feature depth is concentrated in 2D production tasks. Tile, image, object, and group layers support layered map construction, while paint, erase, fill, select, and autotile tools cover the main editing operations. Terrain rules, autotile presets, and weighted terrain fill add control for maps with connected terrain. Object placement supports rectangles, points, ellipses, polygons, and text objects. A built-in pixel editor and palette imports for GIMP, Adobe ASE, Aseprite, JASC PAL, Paint.NET TXT, and HEX formats extend the workflow beyond map layout.

The export range is a major reason to consider 2D Tiler. Projects can be exported to Godot, Unity, Tiled, GameMaker, Defold, Phaser, tIDE, Mappy, raster formats, and native files, giving it a place in workflows built around several engines and tools. AI-assisted generation covers tilesets, sprites, backgrounds, icons, UI elements, and visual effects, although generated drafts may still need refinement. Choose 2D Tiler for free, open-source web editing with asset tools and broad export coverage. Choose a desktop-first or 3D-focused editor instead if browser-only access or a 2D scope does not fit your workflow.
