    • Builds Go images without requiring Docker
    • Creates multi-platform images with manifest lists
    • Generates SPDX SBOMs and reuses Go and registry caches

Our verdict on ko

ko is an open-source, daemonless container image builder for Go applications. It runs go build locally, packages the resulting binary into a container image, and publishes that image to a container registry without requiring Docker. The tool is aimed at developers and teams building lightweight CI/CD or Kubernetes workflows, particularly when applications have few operating-system dependencies. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports configurable Go build flags, linker flags, and environments.

Its strongest technical advantage is the combination of build speed and image portability. ko reuses the local Go build cache and registry layers, while supporting multiple concurrent builds through a CLI jobs setting. Multi-platform image builds and manifest lists support delivery across architectures. The tool also generates and uploads SPDX SBOMs by default, adding supply-chain information to published images. Images can be sent to container registries, loaded into a local Docker daemon, or loaded into a KinD cluster. These capabilities make ko a practical fit for teams that want a compact Go-focused build path rather than a general-purpose container build system.

Kubernetes integration is central to the workflow: ko supports YAML templating for Kubernetes manifests and can load images into a KinD cluster. Docker fits as a local daemon destination, while Terraform is listed among its integrations. The trade-off is scope. ko is designed around Go binaries and applications with limited operating-system dependencies, so teams building images for other languages or more complex base-image requirements should choose a broader container build tool. Choose ko for daemonless Go image builds, multi-platform publishing, caching, and default SPDX SBOM generation; look elsewhere when the primary requirement is a language-agnostic or highly customized container build pipeline.
