Our verdict on Knative

Knative gives cloud-native teams a way to build, deploy, and manage serverless workloads in their own Kubernetes environments. Its components cover container-based services, stateless functions, autoscaling, traffic management, and event routing. This is a fit for teams that already operate Kubernetes and want serverless behavior within that environment; it is less suited to buyers seeking a managed hosting service that removes cluster operations.

Knative Serving uses Kubernetes custom resources for Services, Routes, Configurations, and Revisions. It supports HTTP and HTTPS networking, custom domain mapping, and automatic scaling down to zero. Teams can split traffic across revisions, use blue/green deployment, and access revision test endpoints. Function templates and CLI workflows support creating, building, and deploying stateless functions. The listed runtime languages include Node.js, Python, Go, Quarkus, Rust, Spring Boot, and TypeScript. These capabilities offer control over deployment and traffic, but also ask teams to understand and operate the Kubernetes-based model.

Knative is open source, with an open-source pricing model rather than a hosted plan structure. Its ecosystem includes Kubernetes, Flux, Argo CD, Contour, Kourier, and Istio, so it can fit into Kubernetes-oriented delivery and networking setups. Knative Eventing adds event-driven routing alongside request-based execution. Choose Knative if your team wants these serverless capabilities while retaining responsibility for its Kubernetes environment. If you want a hosted platform that manages the underlying infrastructure instead, this operating model is a poor match.
