Jitsi Meet is an open-source video conferencing solution for individuals, teams, developers, and organizations. It supports video and audio meetings, screen sharing, integrated text chat, password-protected rooms, custom meeting URLs, breakout rooms, recordings, livestreaming, Etherpad collaboration, and an end-to-end encryption option. Meetings are available through the browser and mobile apps, while organizations can self-host the software or embed meetings into websites and applications through the External API. It is best suited to teams that value control over deployment and an open-source foundation.

Its platform and ecosystem fit are a central strength. Jitsi Meet works across web, iOS, Android, API, and self-hosted environments, with integrations for Etherpad, YouTube Live, Dropbox, and callstats.io. Etherpad adds shared document collaboration inside meetings, while the External API supports embedded meeting experiences. These options make Jitsi Meet more adaptable than a browser-only meeting tool, particularly for developers and organizations building meetings into an existing service. The end-to-end encryption option also gives teams an additional privacy control, alongside password-protected rooms.

The main trade-off is operational choice. The hosted meet.jit.si service provides free browser-based meetings, while self-hosting requires an organization to take responsibility for its own deployment. Recording and livestreaming are available through configured services rather than presented as a single uniform workflow. Jitsi Meet itself is free and open source, but Jitsi as a Service is a separate hosted developer offering. Choose Jitsi Meet for open-source meetings, self-hosting, embedding, and broad access across web and mobile. Consider another option if you want one packaged hosted product with fewer deployment decisions.

Jitsi Meet pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Free, open-source meetings with web, iOS, and Android access
    • Includes sharing, chat, recordings, livestreaming, and breakout rooms

  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosting adds deployment and maintenance responsibilities
    • Recording and livestreaming depend on configured services
    • Jitsi as a Service is separate from the free Jitsi Meet software
